Northwest Aviation Council 2001 Roll of Honour Award to Shirley
Render for Distinguished Service to Aviation
WINNIPEG - On
December 4th, Coleen Rogers, President of the International
Northwest Aviation Council (INAC) and Executive Vice President &
COO, Winnipeg Airports Authority Inc. (WAA), presented the INAC
2001 Roll of Honour Award to Aviation Historian Shirley Render.
The ceremony occurred at Ms. Render's presentation about her book
"No Place for a Lady" to Northern Spirit, the Winnipeg chapter of
Women in Aviation International.
"Shirley was a
natural choice for the award," said Rogers. "As one of only a few
Aviation Historians in Canada, Shirley digs behind the folklore to
bring us stories of the people who built aircraft, airlines, and
airports. Her contributions have chronicled the people and events
shaping the aviation industry"
"I am thrilled
to be the recipient of the INAC 2001 Roll of Honour Award," said
Render. "It is a pleasure to receive recognition in a field that I
am so passionate about."
Since 1936 INAC
has fostered and promoted aviation development in Canada and the
United States. Membership includes all the northwest states,
western and northern Canada. INAC's Aviation Roll of Honour was
established August 23rd, 1974, to honour those making outstanding
contributions to the promotion of public understanding and
acceptance of aviation's value to the community.
Shirley
has narrated "A Time for Courage", a documentary about Canada's
women ferry pilots which first aired on the History Channel in
November 2000. She is the author of "No
Place for a Lady - The Story of
Canadian Women Pilots" and "Double
Cross - The Inside Story of James
A. Richardson & Canadian Airways". She has contributed to
building the Western Canada Aviation Museum into the second
largest aviation museum in Canada, as a member, as President and
as Editor of Aviation Review. Shirley's love of aviation is not
entirely academic: she has been a licensed pilot since 1974, and
currently flies a 1948, 90 hp Luscombe.
