The Snowbirds dedicate Airshow to Aviation Pioneer Dorothy Rungeling

The Snowbirds visited Welland for the city's 150th anniversary on Aug 28/08.  More than 5000 people in a place as small as Welland was pretty good attendance.  They had an announcer on the ground telling the people the name of each Snowbird pattern. Along towards the end as they made a heart, the announcer said:  "This is the Heart formation and it is dedicated to Dorothy Rungeling for the work she has done in aviation"    Dorothy Rungeling in the audience said “I nearly fell off the bleachers!    What an honour!”.  The airport manager Bruce McRitchie reported afterwards that he had been briefed on this tribute ahead of time, but sworn to secrecy.

September 4, 2008

Capt Jennifer Jones

The Snowbirds were thrilled to perform in Welland, Ontario for the Wings over Welland air show held in honour of the 150th anniversary of the City. The show featured many vintage aircraft, a cadet glider display and a C-130 Display from the U.S. Air National Guard.

The team was honoured to meet aviation pioneer Ms. Dorothy Rungeling, who earned her wings at the Welland airport in 1949 and went on to receive the Order of Canada for her contribution to aviation. Snowbirds 7 (Capt Brett Glaeser) and 8A (MCpl Doug Denham) also had the honour of visiting some patients at the seniors' residence at the Welland General Hospital.

The team would like to thank Mr. Bruce McRitchie and Ms. Erin Grenville for their tremendous dedication and support.  The Snowbirds would also like to extend additional thanks to the Niagara District Airport for their tremendous assistance.
