It's hard to
believe that my term as Governor is nearing its completion (in May
2004)! Being Governor has been a tremendous experience for me, and
I've enjoyed working with you. Below I've tried to share this
experience in words and with photos. Since we're so spread-out
across Eastern Canada, it's hard for everyone to get together in one
place. Hopefully this newsletter will bring us all a little closer
together in spirit, if not physically!

Centennial of Flight

The 100th
anniversary of Powered Flight is almost here! Orville Wright
successfully launched into the air at 10:35 a.m. on December 17th,
1903 - see above picture of his aircraft. As a result of this
flight, our lives are much enrichen!
As part of the
Centennial celebrations, let's take to the air that week! First
Canadian Chapter is planning a fly-in to Brampton airport on
December 17th for lunch (12:30 PM) - a Centennial Flight logbook
will be used to record all participants, and photos will be taken.
If the weather doesn't cooperate, then they will drive in! They
welcome other 99s to join in. Want to participate - contact
Suzanne Wiltshire.
Sounds like fun!
Sue Ehrlander will
be active in Saint Johns, NB (Atlantic Chapter) throughout the week
of celebrations, and her activities include the delivery of Air
Bears courses to children. In London, Maple Leaf Chapter will also
be doing an Air Bears session Dec. 14th at the London Children's
Museum's Open House.
Bobbi Roe wants
articles about Centennial of Flight activities for the Ninety-Nines
News. She can be contacted at
articles99news@cs.com.
The Centennial
celebrations are a wonderful opportunity to look back at the amazing
progress we've made, and a chance to look ahead into the 21st
century and beyond. Please participate - after all, some of us may
not be around to celebrate the 200th anniversary ☺

Individual awards
1. Governor
Service Award
Each year, we
search the East Canada Section for worthy candidates for our "Governor’s
Service Award". Each chapter is asked to identify an
individual who has made outstanding and continuing contribution to
the 99s and general aviation. Please contact your
Chapter Chairman with your
recommendation by January 15th, so she will have time to submit a
Chapter nomination. Chapter nominations should be sent to
Dorothy Berthelet by
January 31st. Email format is acceptable. This is a
wonderful opportunity to recognize the special efforts made by our
members. The GSA winner will receive a beautiful pin and
certificate.

Want to know more
about the GSA criteria and past winners?
2. Amelia Earhart Scholarships!
The Amelia
Earhart Scholarship deadline is fast approaching. You can find
info, including forms, on the 99s International webpage (ninety-nines.org,
look for scholarships, then forms). Please contact Section AE
Scholarship Chairman,
Katharine Nazarian
(see our 99s Directory) if you need assistance filling out the
forms. Your Chapter chairman must receive your application by
December 31st. The application must be post-marked by January 5th
on its way to Katherine Nazarian. The awards will be given out at
the July International conference in Atlantic City.

2004 East
Canada Section candidates - for the Executive and Committee
Chairmen.
Involvement at
Section level is a very rewarding experience!! It's a great way to
help out and to make a difference. We all should take at least
one term at the Section level to gain a better appreciation of our
organization and the multi-talents of our membership. Contact
Marilyn Dickson, Section
Nominating Committee Chairman, and let her know you're interested!
This also applies if you would like to suggest other suitable
candidates. On May 15th, 2004, the new Section officers will start
their term of office.
Chapter Awards
Submissions for
two other important awards are due by Feb. 28th. The results are
based upon the activities from January to December each year. Your
Chapter submission should be mailed to Pat Crocker, 1004-45 Pond
Mill Road, London, ON.
- APT
Award: To encourage 99s to remain "current" in terms of flying
skills, East Canada Section annually presents an "APT" (Annual
Proficiency Training) Award to the Chapter who qualifies as the
most active Chapter.
To help your Chapter win, qualifying
pilots should complete the
APT form each year and submit it to their Chapter chairman,
who will annually submit the Chapter's results to the East
Canada Section APT Coordinator. The winner each year is
announced at the Spring Section Meeting.
-
The Patricia
Crocker Aerospace Award:
To promote and
to communicate air education initiatives by and for all members,
an annual award is presented to the winning Chapter, based upon
their involvement in aerospace education in the community. To
learn more about this award, and how you can help your Chapter,
visit the AE Award page.
To learn more
about the wide variety of aerospace education courses, visit the
Aerospace Education pages.
Caution: getting others, especially children, excited about
flying can be addictive!

At the International Level:
I recently attended
the Nov 2003 Board of Directors Meeting in Oklahoma City, and found
it was an educational, busy, and fun session. The action-packed
agenda was proactively addressed by the Board, and they actively
listened to and considered all advice offerred by the Council of
Governors and the various Committee Chairs. An exciting project was
announced - watch for news about a project about the Challenger
Flight Centre (http://www.challenger.org/) in the Ninety-Nines
News. Great work has been accomplished to address the mold problem
in the archives area.
Sections/Chapters
are being encouraged by HQs to have a fund-raiser to help with the
archives / Museum (http://www.ninety-nines.org/museum.html)
upgrades. I had a chance to visit the 5000' sq foot 99s Museum of
Women Pilots, and was quite impressed. Although I didn't have much
time to spend there, I was thrilled to see some Canadian content in
the Museum and on the main floor (where Lorna deBlicquy was
featured!). Jody McCarrell called me afterwards, to encourage us to
consider donating other Canadian artifacts. Preservation of our
aviation past is important. I encourage you to think of a fundraiser
that would enable us to contribute to this, both at the
International level and at the Section level.
The 99s Historical
Display was damaged by weather last year. If you can help out with
its restoration or continued development, please contact
Nat McHaffie or
Shirley Allen.
I would like to
share our Historical Display with the World by making it a virtual
display on our webpage in 2004! This project could be moved up to
earlier in 2004 if a volunteer steps forward to take "macro"
photos/images of the display text and images. The display currently
resides at the Downsview Museum, and arrangements could be made
through Nat McHaffie. These images can be converted into a format
we can publish on the web. If no volunteer is available, this will
be one of my post-Governor projects, likely carried out in the
summer, 2004.

2004 and 2005
East Canada Section Meetings
2004
Section Meeting
This event will be
hosted by Maple Leaf Chapter in London during the May 15th weekend.
Please mark it on your calendar and plan to attend.
The tentative
agenda for Saturday is a tour of FSS at 10:30am, followed by lunch
at the Katana restaurant (11:30am to 12:45pm), followed by our
Section meeting (1:00pm. to 4:00pm).
For those who wish
to fly in on Friday, accommodations can be arranged at the Airport
Hotel - Maple Leaf Chapter will host a wine and cheese party for
everyone that evening.
Interest Survey: Would you be interested in
seeing (or participating in) an aerospace education session e.g. Air
Bears, Theory of Flight OR Girl Guides Air Badge, during this
Section meeting? If yes,
let the Aerospace Chairman, Pat Crocker know.
Sometimes it's easier to get involved in aerospace education, once
you've had a chance to see it in action! If there's interest, we'll
then see if it can be arranged (no guarantees).
The
2005
East Canada Section Meeting
Elaine Morrow,
North Central Section Governor (and International 99s Vice
President) would like us to have a joint Section meeting in East
Canada Section in April or May, 2005! I think this is a wonderful
opportunity for us to host this type of event! Count me in to help
the incoming Governor organize this event! Any comments -
please write me!
Thanks.
Members News:
Congratulations to the following members for
their recent accomplishments:
Joy Parker
Blackwood is now on the General Aviation Committee's Precision/Rally
Flying Rules committee.
Susan Begg has her
IFR rating. She'll be receiving her Amelia Earhart Scholarship
medallion soon. Congratulations, Susan! We know how challenging
this was, given your busy schedule!
Catherine (Kitty)
Houghton has her Chinese Pilot Licence! The Chinese government only
gave civilians permission in the past couple of years! Awesome!
Perhaps Kitty will write an article about her experience!
Wendy Percival (MLC)
now has her medical back without any restrictions! Fantastic!
Dorothy Rungeling
has published her third book "The Flying Housewife" (132 pages, 28
short stories - it can be ordered for $ 15 + 1.50 shipping by
contacting the author
directly).
Melanie Rader (MLC)
married Major Steve Will (AKA Snowbird # 1) in October. Melanie has
started competing in aerobatic competitions this year, as well as
flying in air shows.
What a great photo! Photo taken by Monty. In front of Melanie's
Pitts.
Adele
and Daphne are off once again on their humanitarian flights to
Africa. What an inspiration to others! Where do they get the
energy!
Kathy Fox
was appointed NavCanada's VP, Operations effective April 1, 2003.
Kevin Psutka, COPA President sent out a message which included:
"Please join me in congratulating Kathy in this well-deserved
appointment! She is the hardest working, most dedicated person I
know in the aviation field."
Canadian Award in Aviation:
This award was created over 25 years ago to acknowledge
contributions to aviation of groups or individuals. It is funded
primarily by donations of members. The 2003 Award winner was The
RCAF Memorial Museum, CFB Trenton for their Halifax NA337
Restoration Project. For more info, visit the new
CAIA page.
Note: It's
impossible to list every accomplishment of 99s in our Section - in
part due to inability to remember everything; in part because some
items I am not aware of.. We have so much talent, I am constantly
amazed and am very humble to be your Governor!
If I've missed
something very important, please let me know. I'll wave my magic
wand, and the "Members News" area will be updated with it!

Governor's Photo Album
The next portion of
my newsletter will be a "photo album" approach to my past 6 months
or so as Governor (as they say "a picture is worth a 1000 words).
The pictures cover the Oklahoma City visit; Pat Crocker's daughter's
wedding; Marie Spence's great fly-in in September; Oshkosh;
Newfoundland tour; Kansas Forest of Friendship visit; Dorothy
Rungeling's visit to Ottawa for her Order of Canada induction.
Nov. 2003
International 99s Board of Director meeting's photo album follows.
To clarify - my husband Bob was inducted by Jody McCarrell, 99s
President, in a fun-filled ceremony. Elaine Morrow, 99s VP, donated
a 49.5 pin for the occasion. This was the 1st time that this
ceremony was performed at a 99s Board of Directors - people were
almost rolling in the aisles because of the antics! Many wanted to
know how to get the pin and the induction ceremony wording!

June 16, 2003 East Canada Section Meeting in Oshawa, was combined
with the start of the Gold Cup Air Rally! Some highlights - Maple
Leaf Chapter won the APT Trophy and the Patricia Crocker Aerospace
Award. Jane Atkinson-White was this year's Governor Service Award
(photos in Sept photo album above). Everyone celebrated Joy Parker
Blackwood's upcoming induction into the Forest of Friendship, and
Joy expressed her appreciation! Gold Cup Rally participants
attended the meeting. Kathy Fox, VP, NavCanada gave a fascinating
presentation of the evolution of air traffic control in Canada.
Again this year, it
was decided to waive Section’s Chapter dues ($ 6 per member), and
use our positive cash position to fund the projected annual deficit.

May 2003 - meeting with Dorothy ("Dottie") Rungeling, Order-of-Canada winner in
Ottawa! This was captured in an
article, with pictures, published in COPA - Dorothy enjoyed her
first jet flight and was treated VIP style by WestJet; she was
invited to speak at the banquet after the OOC; she celebrated her
92nd birthday with some of her former rally-flying co-pilots. Some
