Welcome to 2003, the 100th anniversary of Powered Flight!

First, I am sorry to not have been in touch before this.  It has been a hectic time due to my language training and home renovations, etc.

Section Meeting

I’d like to thank the First Canadian Chapter, especially Wendy Gluhushkin, Laureen Nelson-Boutet, Jill Dermott and Akky Mansikka, for organizing a memorable well-attended Section Meeting at the Aerospace Museum.

Marilyn Dickson presented Deb Logan with the Governor’s Service Award for her enormous contribution with the FCC newsletters and communications in general.  Well deserved!  Marilyn presenting the award to Deb

Fay Gillis Wells

On December 2nd, we lost one of our key 99s, Fay Gillis Wells.  She was the originator of the letter in 1929 which sought out women pilots to form a new association - ultimately called the Ninety-Nines!  She led a fascinating life right up to her death.  This fall, she personally signed 3 copies of the original letter and sent them to the Maple Leaf Chapter for their celebration event (anniversary of the 99s forming in 1929. Fay was an inspiration to all who were fortunate enough to know her!

2002 International Convention in Kansas City

Several 99s from East Canada Section attended this convention in Kansas City.  Joy Parker Blackwood, now a Trustee of the A.E. Scholarship, attended.  Susan Begg was the Canadian AE Scholarship winner this year, to be used for her instrument rating. Marilyn Dickson flew Susan into K.C. in her Cherokee.

Sue Ehrlander also attended as an Endowment Fund Trustee.  Rod Machado, the keynote speaker, kept everyone laughing while presenting his message of safety education.   Attendees were also to visit the AE Festival, including the AE Birthplace Museum and Forest of Friendship site.  A spectacular fireworks display and riverside airshow also were enjoyed.

The Annual General Meeting was wrapped up in one morning.   Dues were raised by $US 10 this year, with much debate (however with no other sources of revenue it is absolutely necessary). Only segment that stayed the same was for "overseas" sections. The increase was supported by both East and West Canada. HQ’s building is having mold problems.  Certainly some archival documents are at risk.  As a result of 9/11 attack, the cost of insurance has skyrocked as well.

Joy delivered original luggage owned by Amelia Earhart to the birthplace museum – Pat Crocker managed to have this original luggage donated to the 99s.  It now resides upstairs at the Museum with a couple of other luggage pieces underneath a poster of which shows that exact piece!  Neat!

The 2003 International Conference will take place in July in Huntsville, Alabama.  A Special Space Camp is being scheduled for the weekend before the Conference.  Full details will be in the January/February 2003 99s News.

The 2005 conference is now confirmed for New Zealand, so let's save pennies to get there!

Governor in Council Fall Meeting

We decided not to hold a Fall Meeting, because there were no significant items to address.

A plaque to recognize Daphne Paterson (1st woman pilot in NB, first commercial woman pilot in Canada) was inaugurated in September, 2002.

East Canada Section provided financial support ($200)to the Canadian Aviation Historical Society (CAHS) for the plaque created at Milligville Airport (near Saint John).  Sue Ehrlander represented us at the ceremonies, and captured the following photos:  Thanks, Sue!

Upcoming deadlines:  Please mark these dates on your calendar so that the deadlines are not missed!

The Governor’s Service Award is intended to recognize an individual who has made outstanding and continuing contribution to the 99s and general aviation.  Chapter nominations should be sent to Dorothy Berthelet by January 31st. This is a wonderful opportunity to recognize the special efforts made by our members.

The A.E. Scholarship deadline is approaching again.  Please contact Section AE Scholarship Chairman, Katharine Nazarian (see our 99s Directory) if you need assistance filling out the forms.

Two other important awards are due by Feb. 28th:  the Annual Proficiency Training (APT) Award and the Patricia Crocker Aerospace Education Awards. These awards are at the Chapter level, and are based upon activities from January to December each year.  The Chapter submission should be mailed to Patricia Crocker (see 99s Directory for address), who is anxiously awaiting them. Competition for the APT trophy is usually stiff!  The winning Chapter will be rewarded with beautiful plaques.  The PC Award is lovely artwork, suitable for public display.

Forest of Friendship

Patricia Crocker has just taken over this portfolio from Felicity McKendry, who has done a terrific job over the past few years looking after several inductees including Julie Payette, Dave Williams, Adele, Daphne, Margaret Ringenberg, Dorothy Rungeling..

Patricia would like to hear from you - she would like some suggestions about who to induct, and ideas about the sponsorship of these inductions.  You can contact her at patriciacrocker@rogers.com.

2004 Around NZ Air Race - Message from the organizers:

"We are organizing an air race around New Zealand to be conducted in the beginning of 2004. The last around NZ air race was run over 10 days in February 1991. Approximately 110 aircraft and crews had a fabulous
time in a most memorable event which still has people talking. It is time to do it again. The objective is to have FUN!
To assist with the organization and planning we are looking for expressions of interest from anyone who wants to be involved. If you could take a couple of minutes to choose your preferred answer on the linked survey we would be most appreciative. www.airrace.co.nz/html/survey.php
(If you can not open the page cut and paste the above URL into your web browser) Once submitted, go and have a cup of tea or a beer and wait for more exciting information!
Please feel free to forward this information to anyone you feel may be interested. www.airrace.co.nz  Our web site is updated continuously so visit it for further information"

Membership Directory - Online Access and Updating

Pamela O'Brien, the 99s International webmaster, has done a fantastic job!  You can now update your own information or access the entire 99s database online.

Want to know how to do this?

Also there's an excellent list of aviation books located at www.ninety-nines.org/books.html

One Chapter's initiative:  The creation of a chapter library!

A "library" was set up by Maple Leaf Chapter for their members to share.  What a great idea!

Submitting Articles

Have you submitted aviation articles recently?  I'd be interested in compiling a list of companies which publish aviation articles.  Obviously COPA Flight is one of the key Canadian publications, but there are other sites out there.  Would you let Dorothy know which sites you've submitted articles to and the results?

Also if you have written an article that you would like to share on the Canadian 99s website, feel free to send it to me as well.  We have an area on our site for this purpose.

Members News: Congratulations to the following members for their recent accomplishments:

Canadian Award in Aviation

This award was created over 25 years ago to acknowledge contributions to aviation of groups or individuals.  It is funded primarily by donations of members.  Please send donations to Grace Howell (Maple Leaf - see address in 99s Directory).

The 2002 CAIA Awards were presented to:

  • Lloyd Richards, the original driving force behind the EAA Young Eagles Program in Canada.
  • Lou Wise, who has photographed more rivers, wetlands, conservations from the air than any other person [Lou was our guest speaker at the Spring Section meeting]

Product: Folding kayaks you can transport in a small plane.

According to the owners, these folding kayaks are light enough to be carried in bags. To see pictures you can visit our website: www.folbot.ca and under the "where in the world" section we have Folbots in a plane.  Owners:  Joanne Gaudet and France Bergeron

"Plane wash" Fundraising Idea, from West Canada Section (Marcia Strang):

"Our plane washes are fun.  The key is to get at least 6 or more 99's out to help, because it would be too much work for just 3 of you.   You will need:

  • A hose and it's better with 2;
  • A ladder to reach the high wings:
  • Long handled wooden brushes (soft) for washing the tops of wings;
  • Lots of cloths, sponges, and shammies to wipe down the plane afterward (at least 2 for every person there)
  • plane washing soap
  • As many buckets as you have helpers
  • Some sort of window cleaner and certain clothes reserved just for the windows.
  • Everyone should bring a sturdy pair of Rubber Gloves
  • Someone with a camera to record the moment!

Pick a warm weekend as best you can.
It takes 15 to 20 minutes to do an average Cessna, as long as you have 5-6 persons.
We advertised in the local events in the aviation newspapers, put up posters around the airports (you can always attach a poster to a dirty looking airplane!) and talked to the flying schools at your airport of choice to see if they will bring their aircraft over. We used to set a $20 min donation, with more for twins, but I'm thinking maybe a $30 min. donation or more now.

Location - we had a perfect location already designated as an aircraft wash place.  If you plan to use up the only aircraft wash place at your airport, make sure to get the OK through the airport manager, since the local tenants will be shut out for the day.  The airport manager may even be able to help advertise your wash day, if they put out a notice that the wash area is not available due to your Airplane Wash Fundraiser.

Other money - one year we borrowed some BBQs from the local flying school, and had hot dogs and pop for sale (make it a warm weekend!).  To make it viable, make sure to get all of the flying schools aware that you have cheap food available for their students for the day, to get more customers."

If you have ideas for fundraising events or for Chapter initiatives e.g. library, please share them with me.  I will include these ideas in the Governor's newsletter and the webpage.

I can be contacted at canadian99s@yahoo.ca or at (613) 837-3507.

As Governor, I work for you, the members.  Please let me know your concerns/issues/ideas.

One final item before closing off:  2003 is the 100th anniversary of flight.  It would be an ideal time to undertake a project to celebrate this event.  Do you have any ideas?  One idea that has surfaced in Eastern Ontario Chapter is to do a repeat of our "Fly 99 Girls" project, except it would be a "Fly 100 (99 + 1) Girls Project.  This could be done as a Section project or could be done individually by one or more Chapters.  I'd appreciate your feedback as to whether this project is something you feel we should pursue, or if you can suggest another project.

We have some amazing people in our Section and I would appreciate hearing about members news/events, etc. to share with others.

Happy New Year!

Dorothy Berthelet, Governor
