The
99s have a long history of air races and rallies.
Canadian 99s have flown in Powder Puff Derbies,
Transcontinental Air Rallies,
Around-the-World Air Races, etc.
In the 2003 Air Race Classic, the flight will be
from Pratt Kansas to Manteo, NC with a final fly-by at Kitty Hawk,
where flying began.
The First Canadian Chapter, East Canada Section has organized 3 fun
Gold Cup Air Rallies since 2000.
The first rally, planned to celebrate
the 50th anniversary of East Canada Section 99s by visiting all
geographical areas that have 99s' Chapters, started at London
Airport and took us to Fredericton via Buttonville, Ottawa, Trois
Rivieres, Sherbrooke and Montreal. Twenty-five women pilots flew the
route.
1st GC Air Rally (2000)
The second Rally the next year
departed from Guelph, and the route planned was to be over
north-western Ontario and across the western provinces.
Thunderstorms in those places forced participants to re-plan the
entire route the morning of departure, and subsequently,
participants found themselves crossing the USA border at Port Huron.
After clearing Customs, participants dodged the weather as they flew
into small airports across the northern and mid-west United States.
The destination of Calgary was finally reached in time to attend
the International Convention of the 99s
2nd GC Air Rally (2001)
The First Canadian Chapter (FCC) of
the 99s is planning another Gold Cup Air Rally, this time to
celebrate 100 years of powered flight.
