2005 Events December, 2005: Dorothy Berthelet hosted the annual Christmas potluck and gift exchange - who knew there were so many different types of airplanes and helicopters, all hiding under Dorothy's tree. Rani came the furthest - all the way from Brockville! November: Members visited Lianne Boileau's house for a potluck and social event with the CWIA. The food and ambiance was very warm and enjoyable. Fall: Young girls aged 9-14 were flown. to inspire them to get involved in aviation. This activity was held at the Canada Aviation Museum. Fun educational sessions were also hosted by the Museum as part of this joint project. October - Felicity and Spence McKendry celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary! Their volunteer activities are wide-ranged - from the Kingston Chapter Parkinson's Society, Mustang Club, Meals on Wheels, etc. What an inspirational pair! June 10-12 A wonderful fun-filled joint conference, between East Canada Section and North Central Section (USA), was hosted by our Chapter. We had storytelling sessions, information sessions about aviation-related topics (Fly for the 99s Breast Cancer Cure; Wings of Hope; Rally; pioneer stories), an afternoon at Jane's riverside property with lots of food, beverages, floating flying, fun; an entertaining and humourous keynote speech by Dee Brasseur; an Amelia Earhart scholarship to Akky Mansikka towards her Instruction Class IV, and many more items. Many new friendships were formed. Unfortunately the weather caused the Gold Cup Air Rally, scheduled to depart Sunday morning, to be postponed to a later date. June 4th, a Theory of Flight presentation was made to the Canadian Association of Girls in Science at the Institute for Aerospace Research in Ottawa. Girls ages 7-14 participated. Games, a video, presentation all helped show the 4 forces involved in flying. May 7th, members attended an informative and entertaining tour of the new Ottawa control tower. Bravo Jim Robertson on doing such a great job! Lunch followed at the Ottawa Flying Club. March 23th - a packed house attended Joanna Livingston's informative presentation about the weather forecasting website. March and February planning sessions for the June conference were held at Dorothy Berthelet's house. January 20th - we gathered at the Heart and Crowne pub in the Byward Market for a social planning occasions for our upcoming exciting Fly 99s Girls and June convention events. 2004 Events December 12th, 2004 EOC 99's Christmas Brunch. Some 16 persons attended this popular Christmas buffet and gift exchange at the Bay Street Bistro. Pictures to follow. Mo Egan visited China and Hong Kong in late November and early December. She thoroughly enjoyed her adventures - pictures to follow. November 27th local 99s gathered at Dorothy Berthelet's home for the 2004 Annual General Meeting, followed by a sumptuous potluck feast! Plans were laid for an exciting 2005 schedule of activities - hosting the joint North Central Section-East Canada Section meeting; flying 99s girls in May; the 2005 Gold Cup Air Rally..... Nov. 2nd - Kathy Fox was inducted into the Quebec Aviation Space Hall of Fame. Some 700 persons attended this prestiguous event. Kathy is the youngest person inducted so far! October 27th About 20 people attended the tour of Ottawa's air accident investigation lab. This event was arranged by Carol Thomas. See pictures in our photo album above. In October, Susan flew to Toronto to join in the Yearbook planning session. In October, members flew to Montreal to visit Julie-Ann and other 99s from FCC and MLC chapters. In September, Kitty Houghton started her new assignment in Vienna, having completed 4 years in China. Kitty told Dorothy & Bob Berthelet for a wonderful flight over the Sierra Nevada mountains and Yosemite National Park in August. Dorothy & Bob were attending the International Toastmasters convention in Reno, Nevada, while Kitty was there on "at home leave". In September, Chapter members flew to Kingston to join Felicity in a game of golf and to participate in the Fly-in breakfast. Weather enroute was unusual but manageable. Westport airport was clearly visible as we flew by. While golfing in Kingston, we were able to enjoy seeing airplanes land, since the airport and golf course are side-by-side. Sand hazards became a combination sand / water hazards due to the heavy rains 2 days earlier [see the photo album]. The sunshine, light breezes made it a great day outside. Everyone had fun! Spence celebrated his birthday the same day. June 27-30th, 2004 Gold Cup Air Rally (GCAR), GCAR departed Toronto with destination Meadow Lake Saskatchewan. Susan Begg and Sharron Lutman flew from Toronto to Meadow Lake Saskatchewan as part of the rally. May 22nd - we completed the compass rose (added the "N"). It's beautiful! Saturday, May 15th - East Canada Section Spring Section meeting was hosted by Maple Leaf Chapter in London, Ontario. Dorothy Berthelet finished her 2-year term as Governor, East Canada Section. Various get-togethers took place during the January to May period. This included an Annual General Meeting held at the Rockcliffe airport. The above Executive was elected and took office effective April 2004.
Kathy Fox was inducted into Quebec's Aviation Hall of Fame. Julielynn Wong was recognized by MacLean's magazine as one of Canada's best and brightest... Kitty Houghton - She now has her Chinese pilot licence!! She has now moved to Austria, and is searching out women pilots in Europe... Susan Begg has finished her IFR Rating, using her AE Scholarship to fund it. Fly 99 Girls in '99 Project (A joint project between the Chapter and the National Aviation Museum) Everyone involved in this project was thrilled with its success. Want to view pictures/story? |
