2008 Events

Dec. - we hosted our annual Christmas potluck and gift exchange at our favourite brunch place in Ottawa.
In November, our Annual General Meeting was held at Maureen's new home.
On Oct. 19th, we flew to
Peterborough to join 99s from First Canadian Chapter and Maple Leaf Chapter for lunch.
Oct. 17th flight to Kingston to visit Felicity:
It was a beautiful day..... Felicity had hip surgery only 10 short days ago. So I planned a Chapter 'get well' visit  to see her and wish her all the best, in person. (Oct.17/08) Susan,Mo and Sharron flew down to Kingston in Sharron's Cherokee 140, Carol and Rod flew their Grumman, to see Felicity and her daughter Sandra. Our Ottawa contingent arrived at 14:00 hrs. after a fabulous flight. (see photos above). Sandra had flown in from Calgary to be with Mom for the Operation and initial recovery. Felicity is doing very well and loved the card which we gave to her on behalf of the Eastern Ontario Chapter 99s.

The Oct 15th Wind Tunnel Tour went very well (see pictures above). There was a good turn out of a dozen aviation enthusiasts represented by the 99s, Copa Flight 8 and CWIA and local flying clubs. We started in the area where maintenance, repairs are carried out and new parts are fabricated to suit the large variety of prototypes that need to be tested.  Prototypes ranging from aircraft, aircraft parts, cars, trucks, helicopters parts, tall buildings (scale models), flags, boat keels to name a few. Costs on larger prototypes are $1000's of dollars per hour.

The wind tunnel is a horizontal closed circuit atmospheric facility with a large test section  approx. 9m wide x 9m high x 75 ft long. We then walked through the tunnel between huge fans where the wind is forced through. The wind is generated by a DC motor that drives an 8-bladed fan and puts out 300psi to power the fan blades. It is powered by an air-cooled 6.7 MW (9000 hp) . Its speed may be varied. The maximum wind speed is about 55 m/s (180 ft/s).

This facility was originally designed and built to support aircraft research and development. It has since become an exceptionally versatile facility, with a wide range of applications, including aerodynamic testing of full-scale surface vehicles, wind engineering and energy research. In recent years, the institute has focused its research on automotive aerodynamics, both passenger and heavy-duty vehicles.

Sept. 30th - we gathered at the Ritz Canal to catch up on some hangar flying - stories of flying in the Gold Cup Air Rally, in Alaska, and more..

Congratulations to Nicole - she recently earned her commercial pilot licence!

Susan, Maureen and Sharron won the June 2008 Gold Cup Air Rally!  Well done!  We look forward to hearing about it and seeing the pictures at an upcoming EOC gathering.

June 25th - CASARA (Civil Air Search and Rescue Association) gave us a briefing on their organization.

Several local 99s attended the E. Canada Section gathering in Montreal during the weekend of June 13-15.  They also departed St-Hubert airport as part of the 2008 Gold Cup Air Rally.

In May, local 99s gathering at an Italian restaurant in Ottawa to hangar fly and plan for summer flying and activities.

On April 5th, 2008, about 25 Girl Guides (ages 9 to 11) learned lots about aviation - in fact, they learned enough to qualify for their Aviation Badges.  Chief coordinator Kathy Fox delivered an informative one-hour presentation covering the Badge's essential material.  Museum staff then gave the girls an one-hour tour of the Museum.  The girls then heard personal stories about flying from private pilot Dorothy Berthelet and retired military pilot Dee Brasseur.  Numerous other 99s attended, helping to welcome and marshall the girls.  See our photo album for pictures.  We plan to offer this Aviation Badge program regularly (annually or every 6 months).   Prior to this event, several meetings have taken place to plan and prepare for first Aviation Badge event.  Thanks, Kathy for organizing this aerospace educational event!

2007 Events

In December, Carol and Rod welcomed us to their party room for our annual Christmas potluck and gift exchange!  Thanks, Carol!  We had a 99 visitor who is attending university here in Ottawa.  Good food, company and conversation... what more could one want?

On November 10th, we gathered at the Rockcliffe Flying Club for our annual business meeting.  After enjoying pizza and chocolate chip cookies, we settled down to look at the past year's activities and finances, and to plan out the upcoming year.  We had a good exchange of ideas for meetings and fundraising opportunities - more to follow.  Thanks everyone for your suggestions and for taking on activities for the 2008 year. [See picture in our photo gallery, above]

In September, Susan, Mo and Sharron organized and flew in the successful 2007 Gold Cup Air Rally, flying between Leamington, Ontario and Boulder Colorado.  The terminus for this event was the 2007 International Convention of the 99s.  The Canadian contingent made a vivid impression on the other conference attendees!  Dorothy was elected as an International Trustee of the Amelia Earhart Memorial Scholarship Fund.

In August we "manned" a 99s booth at the National Aviation Museum as part of the 2007 Classic Air Rally displays.  We offered part of our display area to the CWIA group, and got to share ideas, etc. with them.

Susan flew to Oshkosh again this year.

In July, Kathy Fox was awarded COPA's prestigious President's Award in Moncton.  ]Kathy retired from her VP Operations role at Nav Canada at the end of June.  She now works part-time at the CTSB.

In May, during the Wings Dinner, Kathy Fox was awarded the Rockcliffe Flying Club's President's Award for her numerous contributions.

In April, Susan hosted a business meeting during which we enjoyed munchies, wine and a Patty Wagstaff video.  We even took the opportunity to work on our question to regain current per TC rules.

In February, we had a movie night at Susan's.

In January, we gathered at Jane's new downtown condo to view the taping of Lorna's and Felicity's presentation.
